Esoteric Stencilism

Borrowing from the mystery traditions and folk medicine, this new collection of stencil cuts is for a series of stoneware wall tiles and covered jars that I’ll have for the Powderhorn Art Fair, Aug 5-6th. A smattering of these images will be featured on enameled copper jewelry as well, but decisions are yet to be made as to which designs make the cut (pun intended). The wall tiles and pendants are intended to act as a reminder to keep a wider perspective in mind, to flow around obstacles or attract abundance, to name just a few. We take subliminal cues from our environments all the time, here’s an attempt at deliberately seeding those spaces with intentional symbolism.

Chaos Theory

I am a compulsive list maker. I don’t do digital, I need paper and pen, analog all the way. Once a week, I condense last week’s list with the coming week’s calendar, to give me an idea of what the docket looks like. My desk is littered with various binders and notebooks, full of documentation pertaining to projects in the works. At any given time, there’ at least a dozen things jostling around in the hopper, but only so many can come out at once, and what will emerge completed from the mix is a combination of planning and happenstance. I have maybe 4 hours of usable time a day, it’s a battle.

Creative Attrition

I’ve talked with old potters who say that if you’re in the business for ten years, consider yourself a success. Everybody seems to know somebody who’s struck out on their own, flung out a shingle, poured themselves into a creative small business for a year or two and then given up out of frustration and a lack of return on investment. Maybe that’s why we have to explain ourselves so much if you, like me, have got the wild-ass idea that you’re going to bush-wack your way through the jungle as an artist-entrepreneur.

The Silver Cord

In metaphysics, the silver cord is described as a strong, silver-colored, elastic cord which joins a person’s physical body to their astral body. In studio practice, I like to think of it as an invisible thread that connects each piece in order of creation, invisibly linking them with the spirit of the work. Since I’m not monogamous with my materials, and like to experiment a lot with new methods, sometimes this subtle webbing seems like the only thing that unites my work.
